+Your initial avatar, before you bother to pick out a proper one, could
+be an animated stick figure.  Build one out of thin black cylinders, but
+with random bump maps to make it look crudely drawn.

+In the end I created an avatar with MakeHuman, basically as close as you
+can get to a stick figure using that software.  It sorta looks like a
+roughly human shape, and androgynous, so we called hir Rough Hir, and
+made her purple.
